    User managed PCs

Try reading this article in InfoWorld.  I am beginning to find more and more support for the idea of letting users manage their own hardware.  I have been trying to get Macs into the building for quite a while.  We came up with a few cases to allow certain people have Macs.  This year, we are adding an additional Mac user…  and the Director of Tech just realized that the Macs are actually equal in price to the PCs we are buying.  What I am not sure she has seen yet is that they are better machines, both in construction and in components.

We will have to wait to see how this one goes down.

OS X Server 10.3.x and Cyrus Administration

I just noticed that I still have mailboxes for users who have long since been deleted from my system.  A quick search on how to rid myself of these turned up this document. http://betabug.ch/blogs/ch-athens/300

For my own reference I am going to duplicate the info I fund to be useful from the above linked document.

    1. Create a user to be your administrator and add that user to /etc/cyrusd.conf
    2. log in:
    /usr/bin/cyrus/admin/cyradm -user (username) localhost

    Listing Quotas:
    lq user/username
    Setting Quotas:
    sq user/username #integer in bytes

Deleting Mailboxes is a two step process.  First you must change the ACL on the mailbox to grant your admin account the rights to delete it.
    setaclmailbox user/username adminusername lrswipcda

Then you may delete the mailbox:
    deletemailbox user/username

    That is all

Canon G9 RAW files and Apple Apertrue

I am bummed…  I just got a hold of my brand new Canon G9 compact digital camera.  I love it!  It is truly a joy to use, and it will clearly be a workhorse for many years to come.  It is sturdy, it is quick, it is flexible…and it shoots in RAW.  How cool… Until I went to download the images using Aperture.  Oh.. they downloaded allright.. but then I get a message across each thumbnail that says “unsupported image format”  How maddening!!

It turns out that Aperture does not support the particular version on the .CR2 file that the G9 generates as it’s RAW file.  Who Knew!??

As it turns out, many people knew about this issue.  Somehow in all my searching on the web for information about the G9 prior to purchase I missed out on these articles form O’Reilly,  and The Digital Story

    How did I miss that?

Anyway, I have a little workflow that seems to be working out…  It is hardly ideal but it ought to put me in a good spot when Apple does finally release support for Canon’s G9 CR2 files.

    Leopard Woes?  Not for me

A quick search for OS X Leopard Problems will leave one feeling as though Leopard is filled with holes and bugs.  While there is much that is shiny and new in Leopard, My findings after a month of use do not indicate any of these issues.  In fact, I have only three complaints, and they are minor UI issues.

I am certainly happy that my experience has not gone the way of this man’s:  http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2223921,00.asp

    Missing Sync

I don’t really like to advertise products in this space… but I have got to say that Mark/Space’s Missing Sync for Blackberry is frickn’ fantastic!!

I have had a Blackberry for several years now and PocketMac has always been just a bit flakey.  It often required babysitting to get it to work.  Sometimes I could connect my Blackberry and it would never see it.  It was annoying.  It got even more annoying after PocketMac stopped supporting it when RIM decided to give it away for free to all Blackberry customers.  RIM took on the support role… by e-mail only it seems…  They don’t tell you that… but when you call they give you and e-mail address to write to if you are a mac user.

Anyway…  Enough of that rant.  The Missing Sync is fantastic.  It just works…  that is all there is to say about it.  It is exactly what I have needed to make my Mac and Blackberry live in harmony.

    I love it…
