Picton Castle - 10 years later
Walked on the decks of Picton Castle today. It’s been years… ten years in fact, since I last set foot on her decks. It was an interesting experience. Dan is the only person on board that was there when I was on board. The ship was much the same, and yet, much changed in the small details. Parts of the ship had been painted different colors, the blocks had been replaced by ornately carved blocks. Other differences too. The stove is now diesel fired, rather than coal, the engine room is cleaner than ever before, (but the engine still leaks oil in all the same places.)
I looked longingly at the ship, knowing that I am not likely to get a chance to sail on her again. Certainly not around the world again.
Looking back….
It has been over 7 years since I stepped ashore in Lunenburg NS after 20 months at sea on board Picton Castle. I was on the first world voyage… Me and my shipmates. I still see them from time to time… In fact Vicki is here in Seattle right now. I am beginning to realize what my role on that ship was. There are some things that I am not so proud of. At the same time, I am very proud of some of my accomplishments… accomplishments that came out of that trip. I think I need to pull this one apart for a while… I will likely have some more to share on this later, this will be an important step I am sure.
Depth
I am looking for a depth sounder… Well… really I am looking for the the head unit to the depth sounder we already have. I need to fine the display unit to a Lowarnce X25b.
I need to find this unit so that I can replace the one I have. It has a very faulty diaplay… it makes me very unhappy :(
Long time… no see
Well… It sure has been a while since I have posted. Much has happened so I will use this post a a catch-up. First and foremost, school is out for the summer! For me and Becca both! That is exciting news because it means that we can sail and hang out together again. Second, Becca and I will be working together next year! She has gotten a job as the Upper School Social Studies teacher at the school where I have been for the past several years. I have a new computer. My trusty 1GHz PowerBook G4 failed me last month The Hard Drive is bad, but this being the second major failure in the last 6 months… I began to feel that I needed a machine I could rely on, so I purchased a PowerMac G5 Dual Core 2.3 GHz, 4.5 Gigs of RAM, and a 30” display. Oh yeah… Apple Care too! (With the help of a friend at Apple I was able to get the whole thing for less than $4200) Last… We finally got our boat back from Seaview East. This is a long story but one which I will tell in a separate post.
Sailing
Went sailing today with Keith and Sara. We came out of the Duwamish and headed NW towards Bainbridge and tacked all the way up the sound until we got to the north end of Bainbridge. It was a fantastic sail, and I have a bunch of pictures that I am going to post on the website shortly here. Becca was on Lavengro today, actually she is with them for the entire week, so I don’t really know how much we will see of her. But we did see a lot of Lavengro today, they were sailing for the north end of Bainbridge too.
We ran back down the sound and into Elliot Bay, and when we got over by Elliot Bay Marina the wind got quite a bit squirrely and stole my Pride of Baltimore hat!! We went back for it, but with the squirrely wind, it was impossible to stay on one tack long enough to recover it. :(
Anyway things were great minus the one great hat.
